Custom Development — SureSoft

Custom Development

When off-the-shelf doesn't fit, we build what does.

Purpose-built applications shaped around your business objectives — delivered with the automated testing that proves them and the training that makes them yours. Since 1996.

The practice

The objective comes first. The software follows.

SureSoft® has been building purpose-built software since 1996 — for Fortune 100 enterprises, public-sector agencies, large non-profits, and small businesses. Every engagement starts with the business objective, not the technology: what the organization needs to happen, measured how, for whom. The architecture, the language, and the delivery plan follow from that.

Three decades of engagements have hardened a library of reusable patterns and tooling — and the judgment to know when to buy, when to build, and when to extend what you already have. When custom software is not the right answer, we say so.

Existing code, improved

We make the code you already own better.

Not every engagement starts from a blank page. Much of our work is improving codebases organizations already depend on — making them faster, leaner in memory, and easier to maintain. The system your business runs on today can usually do far more than it currently does, without being replaced.

The discipline is the same as everything else we deliver: measure first, change with intent, and prove the improvement with automated tests — so performance gains are demonstrated on your workloads, not promised on ours.

How we deliver

Built with discipline. Handed over with training.

Many languages, chosen for you

C++, Java, C#, Python, SQL, and XQuery, to name a few — the language fits your environment and your team, not our preferences.

Automated testing at every stage

What we build is tested as it is built — automated validation from the first component to the delivered system, so quality is demonstrated, not asserted.

Training for the handoff

Delivery includes your people. We train the team that will own the system, so the day we leave is a transition — not a cliff.

Enterprise-grade scalability

Patterns and libraries proven across 30+ years of enterprise engagements — built to handle the load your business actually generates.

Integrations with business-critical technologies

Custom software rarely stands alone. What we build connects to the systems your business already runs on.

Buy, build, or extend

Three decades of judgment about when custom software is the answer — and when it is not. We will tell you either way.

The work in numbers

Delivered engagements. Measured outcomes.

The stories are genericized — our clients' business is their business. The numbers are not.

IoT — Nationwide Device Fleet

Three years of instability — solved in eight weeks

A device company with a nationwide fleet was getting unreliable, sporadic data back from the field — a problem three years of effort had not solved. The root cause lived in the hardware's constraints: the board's small memory was forcing devices to reboot, and customers felt every restart. Once SureSoft understood what the company wanted, it took about eight weeks to deliver embedded software that ran stably within the existing memory — returning significantly more data, far more reliably — along with the ability to roll out software updates to a single device or the entire fleet. The stabilized product gave the company a second life, and significantly more customers came with it.

  • Three years of field instability resolved in about eight weeks
  • Stable within the board's existing memory — no hardware change
  • Significantly more data returned, far more reliably
  • Software updates rolled out per device or fleet-wide
  • Customer growth followed the stabilized product

Venture-Backed Technology Company

Ten months behind, six months to deliver — shipped on the original date

SureSoft joined a project estimated to be ten months behind, with the delivery date six months away and hundreds of millions of dollars on the line. We introduced a DevOps process and streamlined everything from development to test automation, data validation, and the other quality measures — and reduced the amount of code significantly. The system also carried a large amount of data on a specialized NoSQL back end, and query performance had been one of the obstacles standing between the project and its date — we modified and improved the queries, increasing their performance by more than five hundred percent. With a simpler, more functional codebase, the team iterated faster and released on the original projected date, erasing the ten-month delay the project carried when we arrived. The delivery helped the company secure a major round of venture funding for work foundational to their vertical. And because the code carried substantial automated testing, it kept extending cleanly — the same team that had been unable to finish before became markedly more efficient and capable.

  • Ten-month delay erased — released on the original projected date
  • Codebase significantly reduced and simplified, speeding iteration
  • NoSQL query performance improved by more than 500%
  • DevOps, test automation, and data validation introduced end to end
  • Major venture funding round secured after the on-time delivery
  • The inherited team became markedly more efficient on the tested codebase

Where it leads

Custom software rarely travels alone.

Most builds ride alongside other work — connecting systems that were never designed to talk, moving data into the new platform, or preparing content for the AI systems that will answer from it. One engagement, one team, whichever capabilities the objective demands.
